Pol Pot is the ultimate shitpost. In the vast terrain of online politics, irony posts will inevitably attract unironic fringe weirdos. Academics call this phenomena context collapse. And 4channers call it Poe’s Law. But they are describing the same thing. For radically transgressive teens, Pol Pot is the perfect meme because it is indefensible, reprehensible and un-cooptable from every side. The ironic memetic crusade against “glasses wearing intellectuals” culminated in a nihilistic shitposting style which expressed a deep sense of failure and a deflation of political possibilities on the left.
