Welcome to Doomscroll. Episode #16 with guest Briahna Joy Gray is out now. As we enter the historic era of Trump 2.0, deep dissatisfaction with the Democratic party has caused many to reflect and reevaluate progressive strategy.

This week, my guest is Briahna Joy Gray, a lawyer, journalist and political commentator. In 2020, she served as the National Press Secretary for the Bernie Sanders campaign. She is the host of the Bad Faith podcast. In this episode we discuss:
The realities of working within the Democratic party. Why won’t Democrats present a meaningful challenge to Trump?
Freedom of speech on social media. How should we consider Meta’s removal of fact checkers? And who could we trust to be the arbiter of important truths?
Bro podcasts and the rise of mixed politics populism, from Jimmy Dore to RFK, what is this emerging coalition and how might it reshape the political landscape?
I used to get my mainstream news from a few daily programs. Among them, Briahna Joy Gray was a co-host of Rising, an opinion program produced by The Hill, which presents opposing views from the left and right. Gray was abruptly dismissed (the polite way of saying fired) on June 7th of 2024 after a segment discussing Israeli hostages in Gaza. Gray was perhaps the most outspoken mainstream voice on this issue. We discuss the political machinations behind the scenes.
In an era of hyper-polarization, pundits frequently talk about the need to restore “consensus reality”. But this consensus may not arrive in the form of a one-sided victory or even a bi-partisan compromise. Instead, it might resemble the tacit alignment presented on Rising, where each side strategically agrees to preserve deliberation and debate to advance their own political project.

In addition to today’s public episode you can also find bonus episodes for subscribers only below. In particular, I recommend watching the second episode with Quinn Slobodian, where we explore the neoliberal crises of the 1970s & 2020s and their implication for New Deal politics today.
